Ålesund is a coastal town in western Norway, built on three islands linked by bridges. The town has a population of around 50,000, and is one of the most important fishing ports on the Norwegian Sea.
The excursion begins with a climb to the summit of Mount Aksla, offering a stunning panoramic view of the city, the mountains, and the surrounding islands. You will then return to the city to explore its Art Nouveau district. The city owes much of its charm to a fire that destroyed its wooden buildings in 1904.
It was from the ashes of this disaster that a completely new city was rebuilt, mainly consisting of stone buildings designed by young Norwegian architects trained in Germany. Strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau style, they constructed buildings filled with ornamentation, turrets, spires, gargoyles, and some distinctly Norwegian touches like dragon heads.
As you stroll through the city, particularly along the Brøsundet Canal, your guide will point out the rounded towers, curved lines, and leaf-shaped details, all typical of Art Nouveau. A final climb to the top of Mount Aksla will give you a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings.

You can also extend your visit by around 2 hours by visiting the Sunnmøre Museum. In this open-air museum, built on either side of an archaeological site, you'll discover the life of Norwegians in the Sunnmøre region in medieval times.
